Some of our favorite things to do around town.
Eat.
-
Eem
One of our favorite, go-to neighborhood spots right down the street from our first home together. A mix of Thai and barbecue with awesome tropical drinks. Named one of “America’s Favorite Restaurants” by the NY Times. Don’t miss the BBQ fried rice—great vegan/veggie options, too!
-
Clyde's
An old-school, mid-century prime rib restaurant—if they did events we definitely would have gotten married here. Sunken attached bar with a rotating list of house soul & funk bands every weekend. Fun and campy.
-
Hat Yai
Thai fried chicken that is hands down the best you will ever have (bold statement, I know). We always get the hat yai set for two—it comes with curry and roti and is the perfect size for splitting for lunch. The coconut mango horchata is delish, too. Two locations, both great!
-
Lovely's FiftyFity
A family-owned brick over pizzeria that focuses on using seasonal toppings (think fresh greens, foraged flowers, wild mushrooms, and distinctive veggies from local West Coast farms). You might recognize it from the Netflix’s “Chef’s Table” series. Always has some good vegetarian options on the menu.
-
Pip's Donuts
Portland is famous for its donuts, and Pip’s is by far our favorite. Fun fact: the owners also happen to be who we bought our new house from! In addition to their fried mini-donuts, Pip’s also specializes in chai, which is not to be missed.
-
SweeDeeDee
A sweet neighborhood brunch spot that make the most beautiful pastries—Devin often picks them up on his weekend walks with Fred. Local, seasonal menu. Bumping on the weekends; make sure to come a little early to get a seat.
-
Canard
The more casual outpost of the James Beard winning chefs behind Le Pigeon. French inspired bar food with a killer wine program. Oysters, steak frites, steam burgers, and soft serve. The location of our first dinner date, where we celebrated our first anniversary, and where we celebrated our engagement :)
-
Two of Us
Food cart pods are kind of a Thing in Portland. Two of Us, our favorite food cart, is located within the St.John’s Beer Porch. It’s a bit of a schlep if you don’t have a car, but their St. John’s sandwich and tater tots are the best breakfast in the city in our opinion. Other food cart pods we like that are closer to our venue are the Hawthorne Asylum and Cartopia. These are a great option for large crowds or crowds with varying dietary restrictions!
-
Outside of town
For those planning on venturing outside of city limits to explore, we love stopping by Skyway Bar and Grill when we’re near Mt. Hood, and Sugarpine Drive-In and White Salmon Baking Company when we’re driving through the Columbia gorge.
Drink.
-
Roadside Attraction
Our favorite dive bar in Portland and the spot of many of our early dates. Covered outside seating with lots of hidden nooks, plants, and quirky decor. Prime people watching scene and a pool table, if either of those are your thing. Cash only!
-
Sad Valley
If John Waters opened a disco, you’d get Sad Valley. Super vibe-y spot with great lighting and good cocktails. One of Devin’s favorite bars!
-
Deadshot
If cocktails are your thing, Deadshot is not to be missed. Rotating kitchen if you need a bite to eat, but the booze is the real star of the show here. Veronica’s favorite is the Renegade Princess—gin, rum, turmeric, coconut, chamomile, citrus, chocolate, cumin. Sounds weird, tastes delicious.
-
Heavenly Creatures
For the wine lovers, an intimate wine bar/bottle shop that carries small-scale and hard to find producers. Owned and operated by the same folks behind our wedding venue. Small plates for snacking—the whipped camembert with potato chips is what dreams are made of. Other PDX wine bars we like: Bar Norman, Les Caves, Nil, Pairings.
-
Hiyu Wine Farm
For those who have opted to rent a car to explore Oregon’s famous wine country, Hiyu is not to be missed. Natural wines, incredible food—just an over all magical experience. Reservations required (make sure to make them early, they book up fast!). Other wineries we like: Johan Vineyards, Stoller Family Estate (this was Devin’s mom Lori’s favorite winery).
Explore.
-
The Rose Garden
You can’t visit Rose City without a stop at the Rose Garden. Founded in 1917 to help preserve European hybrid roses people feared would be lost to persistent World War I bombing raids, the garden’s main purpose nowadays is to serve as a testing ground for new rose varieties. More than 10,000 individual rose bushes bloom here from late May through October. Make a day out of it and check out the nearby Japanese Garden while you’re there.
-
Powell's City of Books
This Portland landmark is also one of the world’s largest new and used bookstores—it occupies a full city block. Spend a few hours getting lost in the shelves, then stroll up Burnside to shop records and CDs at Everyday Music before looping back up north to explore the boutiques and cafes of NW 23rd Ave/Nob Hill.
-
Hike at Forest Park
Oregonians love hiking. We love it so much, we have a park with more then 80 miles of hikable, bikable trails within city limits. Forest park is one of the largest urban parks within the US, and is a fantastic option for those looking to hike, or just enjoy a peaceful nature walk, without leaving city limits. For those with cars who would like to explore hikes outside of the city, we enjoy the Tom McCall Point Hike.
-
Columbia River Gorge
The Columbia river separates Oregon from Washington, and the canyon that it sits within—the gorge—is breathtaking. For those without a car, we highly recommend booking this half-day tour with Around Portland; they’ll drive you up the gorge, stop by a few of Oregon’s waterfalls, and give you a history lesson on the state while doing it (we’ve been on it twice!). For those with cars who prefer a self-guided tour, you can find many day trip itineraries on where to stop online—we like this one.
-
The Fruit Loop
For those with cars who’d like to explore Oregon’s incredible agricultural industry, we recommend this self-guided tour of 28 on-the-farm fruit stands, wineries, breweries, cideries, and fields of flowers. Make sure to swing by Hope Ranch Lavender. Oregon’s moderate climate is perfect for growing the flower, and July is peak season for the blooms.
-
Psychic Sister
For lovers of vintage clothing and/or the metaphysical—Psychic Sister is the bride’s favorite boutique in the city. Book a tarot reading in the mirror room from a rotating selection of psychics (make sure to book early, spots fill quickly). Wander a block up after to stroll the Alberta Arts Shopping District.
-
Shop a dispensary
Yes, it’s legal here! The city is chock full of dispensaries so you won’t have too much trouble finding one on your own, but we love Oregrown for a more elevated experience, Electric Lettuce on Sandy for a mid-range option, and Floyd’s on Broadway for a good deal.
